Selling price − total costYour profit as a percentage of revenue. A 30% margin means keeping 30p of each £1 after included costs.
Profit ÷ selling price × 100Your profit as a percentage of total cost. Without optional costs, this is the usual markup on purchase price.
Profit ÷ total cost × 100A QUICK EXAMPLE
With no extra costs, you keep £5. That is a 33.33% margin and a 50% markup. The same profit produces different percentages because the starting number changes.
Add £2 of delivery and packaging, and profit falls to £3. Small costs can make a big difference.
| Your numbers | Basic sale | With costs |
|---|---|---|
| Selling price | £15.00 | £15.00 |
| Total cost | £10.00 | £12.00 |
| Profit | £5.00 | £3.00 |
| Margin | 33.33% | 20.00% |
| Markup | 50.00% | 25.00% |
Choose “Find selling price”, enter your cost and set the target to 30. With a £10 cost and no other costs, the price is £10 ÷ 0.70 = £14.2857…, rounded up to £14.29. Adding 30% to £10 gives £13, which is a markup calculation and produces only a 23.08% margin.
With just cost and selling price, this is a simple gross profit estimate. Including selling costs gives a contribution estimate after those costs. It is not your business’s net profit unless you also account for all relevant expenses and taxes separately.
Yes. A selling price below your total costs shows negative profit and margin. If costs are zero, markup shows N/A because dividing by zero is undefined. A zero selling price also makes margin undefined.
There is no single percentage that works for every business. Compare your price with demand, competitors, overheads and the money needed to support your business. A positive result here only shows that the costs entered are covered.
